Los Angeles, CA (July 31, 2019) – The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association announced today details of America in Space at the Hollywood Bowl – a celebration of the achievements of American space travel – Thursday, August 15, at 8PM. Hear how Hollywood’s composers and filmmakers tell the story of America’s push to explore beyond Earth’s atmosphere, from the thrill of the space race, to the possibility of missions to Mars. This one-night-only event features a mix of music, film clips, and archival footage, for a true celebration of the universe’s real stars.
Celebrated film music composer and conductor David Newman leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in stirring music and riveting scenes from blockbuster, award-winning films such as Hidden Figures, First Man, Gravity, Apollo 13, and The Martian. The evening highlights Steven Price’s Oscar-winning best original score from Gravity, as well as the Oscar-nominated score for Apollo 13 by film music giant James Horner.
America in Space features the West Coast premiere of Michael Giacchino’s Advent, commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The work is accompanied by archival footage of the Apollo 11 mission highlighting the incredible technological achievement of landing on the moon, as well as the emotional impact for those that witnessed this cornerstone of American ingenuity. Soprano Diana Newman will perform the work’s solo vocal role.
The evening will also feature music by Gustav Holst, Justin Hurwitz, Aaron Copland, Harry Gregson-Williams, and Penka Kouneva in a tribute to NASA’s women astronauts with archival footage in an original video by Falcon’s Digital Media.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic is also thrilled to be collaborating with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, managed by Caltech. JPL is the world’s premiere center for the robotic exploration of the solar system and beyond. The concert will showcase highlights of JPL’s contributions to U.S. achievements in space through archival footage, simulated imagery, and stunning photography, from the first U.S. satellite to JPL’s current quests to explore the solar system, our own planet, and all that lies beyond. JPL’s Dr. Abigail Fraeman, a planetary scientist and member of the Mars Curiosity rover team, will join the program to share insights about the future of American space exploration.

Hollywood Bowl
One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of nearly 18,000, the Hollywood Bowl has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922 and plays host to the finest artists from all genres of music, offering something for everyone. It remains one of the best deals anywhere in Los Angeles; to this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many classical and jazz performances. In February 2018, the Hollywood Bowl was named Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue for the 14th year in a row at the 29th Annual Pollstar Awards, and in November 2018 was awarded the Top Amphitheater prize at the 2018 Billboard Live Music Awards for the second consecutive year. For millions of music lovers across Southern California, the Hollywood Bowl is synonymous with summer. hollywoodbowl.com
