WHAT:
The Los Angeles Philharmonic and First Congregational Church of Los Angeles present a free neighborhood concert featuring Gustavo Dudamel conducting over 15 musicians from the LA Phil and 36 musicians from three YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles) sites on Sunday, May 12, at 7:00 PM. LA Phil violinist Mitchell Newman, who has been programming the annual concert for over a decade, will conduct two works.
“First Church is proud to welcome musicians from the LA Phil and YOLA back to our cathedral as part of the long partnership that our church has shared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic to showcase the transformative power that music can have in our lives and our communities,” said Reverend Laura Vail Fregin, Senior Associate Minister of First Congregational Church of Los Angeles.
With this annual free community concert, the LA Phil celebrates YOLA’s 16 graduating seniors and will showcase fourth grader Dylan Tran as violin soloist. This year’s concert is a culmination of a residency where LA Phil musicians led masterclasses and sectional coachings with students from three YOLA sites, with Juan Felipe Molano conducting a series of side-by-side rehearsals. The program includes works for chamber and orchestral ensembles ranging from Bach to Moncayo.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Neighborhood Concerts offer free orchestra, chamber music, and jazz concerts in churches, community centers, and other local venues around Southern California. The Los Angeles Philharmonic has been presenting free Neighborhood Concerts for over 20 years, as part of the organization’s dedication to making music accessible to the widest possible audience.
“What a privilege to perform with the gifted, dedicated and enthusiastic YOLA musicians and my amazing LA Phil colleagues. All of us in the LA Phil understand the importance of guiding and inspiring the next generation of musicians,” said Mitchell Newman. “In celebration of the orchestra’s 100th anniversary season, we are thrilled that Gustavo Dudamel can join us, and that an expanded force of musicians will perform at this always moving, free community event that also highlights our graduating seniors.”
Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) is LA Phil Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel’s signature initiative through which the LA Phil and community partners provide free instruments, intensive music training, and academic support to students from underserved neighborhoods, empowering them to become passionate learners and vital citizens. Beginning with 80 students in 2007, YOLA today serves over 1,200 students, studying up to 18 hours per week at four community-based sites where mentorship and leadership training is integral. YOLA students have the opportunity to work with LA Phil musicians and world-renowned artists and conductors, travel to cities foreign and domestic, and perform in iconic venues such as Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl.
YOLA is made possible in South Los Angeles, the Rampart District, Westlake/MacArthur Park, and East Los Angeles through the following community partners that share fiscal and programmatic responsibilities with the LA Phil: EXPO Center, Harmony Project, Heart of Los Angeles, Camino Nuevo Charter Academy and Esteban E. Torres High School, Torres East L.A. Performing Arts Magnet.
