Keeping It Green: A Day in the Life of the Bowl

Ver y escuchar

There’s never a dull moment at the Hollywood Bowl. We stay busy around the clock! Explore what happens onsite at the venue before, during, and after an LA Phil concert.

MORNING

5AM: MORNING MAINTENANCE

Long before the crack of dawn, the Hollywood Bowl is awake and our team is hard at work. Groundskeepers, custodial crews, and security staff open the gates and begin preparing the park for another busy day.

Landscapers trim hedges, fresh food and merchandise deliveries arrive, and stagehands start setting up the nearly 3,000 Box seats before the day’s  rehearsals and evening performances.

7AM: STREET SWEEPING & SOUTH LA CAFE

When you’re ready for your morning pick-me-up, stop by South LA Cafe! Grab a coffee, tea, or pastry from the Hollywood Bowl’s exclusive coffee partner. Located in the Plaza Marketplace, South LA Cafe is a Black-owned cafe and market whose mission is to provide fresh, affordable, accessible, and healthy food options for the community.

About the same time the coffee is brewing, you might see our street sweeper roving around. Every morning, it goes through the park and along nearby neighborhood streets to make sure each pathway is clean and ready to welcome guests.

Did you know? The LA Phil just might be the only orchestra in the world to have its own street sweeper!

South LA Cafe operates daily from 7am to 3pm and during performances.

8AM: SCALING THE STAIRS

Looking for a scenic morning workout? Outside of rehearsals and performances, we welcome neighbors and visitors to get their steps in by running or walking the aisles. Climb every staircase in the Bowl and you’ll have covered nearly a mile of stairs!

Did you know? A free fitness club meets here. Learn more by checking out @SaturdayStairs on Instagram.

9:30AM–12:30PM: REHEARSAL

Our musicians put in many hours of practice and fine-tuning to prepare for a performance on the Bowl’s John Williams Stage. On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and select weekends, you might hear the Los Angeles Philharmonic or Hollywood Bowl Orchestra getting ready for that evening’s concert.

Most rehearsals are free and open to the public, offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the music. To receive up-to-date information regarding schedules, email information@laphil.org or call Audience Services at 323 850 2000 (beginning Monday of each week) to listen to a prerecorded list of upcoming rehearsals.

Pro tip: Bring an umbrella or sun hat to stay cool while attending the morning rehearsals.

10AM: HOLLYWOOD BOWL MUSEUM

Discover more than a century of music and history at the Hollywood Bowl Museum. Situated at the bottom of Peppertree Lane, our free museum gives visitors the opportunity to learn about the Bowl’s legacy as one of the most iconic venues in the world.

Come see our new permanent exhibit, featuring physical artifacts like piano rolls, historic program materials, and the building’s original 1939 fireplace from when it used to serve as a tearoom. Learn more and find our summer and off-season hours here.

Did you know? For the first time, the public now has access to a searchable database of the Bowl’s performance history, spanning more than 6,000 concerts and events. Visitors can search by artist, conductor, date, decade, genre, and more.

AFTERNOON

1PM: LUNCH BREAK

Picnicking in the park has been a part of Bowl culture for generations. All are welcome to pack, bring, and enjoy a bite to eat in one of our various green spaces. We have 14 gorgeous picnic areas, plus more room on the Box Office roof, on Toyon Terrace, and at Highland Camrose Park.

On concert nights, select areas open as early as four hours before the performance. Parties of 20 or more people can reserve picnic areas by emailing groups@laphil.org or calling 323 850 2050.

2PM: FOUNTAIN REFRESH

On your way into the venue, you probably saw the iconic 22-foot-tall granite fountain. The Muse of Music, Dance, Drama was designed in 1940 by George Stanley, the sculptor behind the Oscar statuette.

Once a week, before our day-time crew leaves in the afternoon, they clean and maintain the fountain to keep its tiles, lighting, and mechanisms in pristine, working condition. The Muse of Music, Dance, Drama is the Bowl’s “front porch,” and we love when it looks good!

6PM: BOWL SHUTTLES AND PARK & RIDE

As it gets closer to showtime, thousands of concertgoers make their way to the Bowl. Many guests choose to ride the Bowl Shuttle or Park & Ride buses instead of driving directly to the venue, helping reduce traffic, the hassle of parking, and smog-related emissions in the neighborhood.

Did you know: During the 2025 season, 39% of our audience arrived via Shuttle or Park & Ride.

NIGHT

8PM: SHOWTIME

Nearly 1,000 staff members have been working up to this point. As the concert gets started, many of them will continue working backstage, operating concessions, and monitoring your  safety throughout the evening.

9:30PM: CHANGING OF THE MARQUEE

During the concert, we update the text on the marquee from the current night’s performer to the artist and date of the upcoming program.

10PM: FIREWORKS

We light up the sky with pyrotechnics roughly 10 nights every season. While you’re watching the fireworks, parking  lot staff are covering cars with tarps and brushing away embers...just in case.

Did you know? Each fireworks show averages 1,600 individual explosions, 100 bouquet showers, and 4–6 animated pieces. Learn more about our tradition of fireworks here.

10:30PM: TRAFFIC CONTROL

As thousands of guests leave the venue, it takes a team effort to get everyone back home in a safe and timely manner. With the Bowl being situated along the 101 and Highland Avenue— the second-busiest street in Los Angeles—we work with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) to direct traffic and keep the flow of cars, motorcycles, buses, and shuttles moving as efficiently as possible.

Did you know? An LA Phil staff member accompanies an LADOT traffic officer up inside the electronic marquee—also known as the Crow’s Nest—at the intersection of Pat Moore Way and Highland Avenue to manually control green and red lights for each lane.

11PM: SECURITY  SWEEP & WEAPONS DETECTION SYSTEM

The metal detectors are just one part of our robust security system. We have an entire weapons detection system that we reset at the end of each night.

12AM: POST-CONCERT CLEANUP

When the performance ends, production crew members take apart the stage, load up the sound and lighting equipment, and pack everything away.

Our overnight cleaning crew arrives to tidy up each Bench seat, Super Seat, and Box, ensuring that no trash or lost items have been left behind. Forgot something at the Bowl? Visit our Lost & Found page and fill out a form, so that if we’ve found an item that fits the description, you can pick it up.
